Forum Thread: Issue with Kali-Rolling Usb Update && Upgrade && Dist-Upgrade

Installed Kali-rolling 32bit in USB drive as per https://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/how-to/install-kali-live-usb-drive-with-persistence-optional-0162253/ with persistence. And reboot into "live Kali persistence". Here, find everything fine except do not see any drive in the desktop named "persistence" (only see that drive when boot into "kali live" ).

Then try to recheck the sources. list while in the persistence boot, and then,

apt-get update ..... it was all done without any error/issue.

then apt-get upgrade... took hours of time and showed one error in the end ;
"you might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct this,
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
john: Depends: john-data (= 1.8.0.6-jumbo-1-10kali8) but 1.8.0.6-jumbo-1-0kali7 is installed
E: unmet dependencies. Try using -f."
when try "apt-get -f install"

shows :

dpkg-deb: error: subprocess paste was killed by signal (broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cche/apt/archives/john-data1.8.0.6-jumbo-1-0Kali8all.bed
E: Sub-process /user/bin/dpkg returned an error code(1)

Next again when run apt-get upgrade, same error shows and suggest to run "apt-get -f install". some file were updated and in the end some were unable showing the similar dependency issue. then i just reboot the system and ooops!! i cant log into GUI interface from persistence mood. at the startup the login window appears asking for username and password and after providing it take a little time.. try to go into desktop and fail and return to the same login window. I try "ctrl+Alt+F3" and its the command interface, i tried to do different things from here like installing snort and unable asking for update. Then i reboot and i can log in from live mood and and try to see the updating errors and run the update and upgrade command and it gives the following errors in the end:

Please ignore the "no space related error" i know for live one i did not keep much space but for persistence i kept 10.5GB.

This same process happed for me its been 2 days. I keep downloading, installing , making persistence and finding different solutions over net and in the end still stuck.

Requesting for expert advice for me.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long description.

I am running Kali-rolling 32 on USB w/persistence. I used the install guide from http://docs.kali.org/downloading/kali-linux-live-usb-persistence/

here is what my partitions and file system looks like on the usb

----------------
is this what you have for your sources?
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb h+tp://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib

Note: i had to use a "+" instead of a "t" because the formatting on this site sucks my ass.

----
instead of using apt, try updating with
gpk-update-viewer

yes I have similar in sources.list file. and tried as you suggested:

gpk-update-viewer
and the result is below:

: unable to init server: could not connect: connection refused
(gpk-update-viewer:2237): Gtk-Warning *:cannt open display:

Note: my GUI is not working from persistence mood.

I tried this one too :

sudo apt-get install -f

and see that its installing the john-data1.8.0.6-jumbo-1-0kali8 .... processing .. processing .. and again oopps!!

(broken pipe)

anyone any idea please ?

maybe

# apt --reinstall install john-data1.8.0.6-jumbo-1-0kali8

or try using apt instead of apt-get
apt update
apt upgrade

Did not work :(
